On Saturday 19 March 2016, an historic event took place in the grounds of Plantation House, St Helena Island. Jonathan the Giant Tortoise - the oldest known living land animal on Earth and creakingly old national treasure at an estimated age of 184 years - was washed for the first time in recorded history by vet Dr Joe Hollins. Joe explained that the reason for bathing Jonathan came after he cleaned - and transformed - the shell of one of the female tortoises at Plantation House. Joe consulted a tortoise specialist to establish the method of cleaning, which includes gentle, circular scrubbing using non-abrasive materials. St. Helena Island is a magical place on the South Carolina coastline where African American men and women have farmed this land and fished this water for centuries--first as plantation slaves, then as freedmen. It's now one of the last communities on the East Coast that hasn't been swallowed up by development and tourism. But St. Helena's way of life is at a crossroads. Watch and see how farmers and fishermen have adapted to the modern world and whether they would be able to pass this rich heritage to the next generation.

Two centuries later, this small piece of land with strong tourist potential remains remote, despite the construction of a brand new airport. For safety reasons, long-haul flights are unable to land. The residents of Saint-Helena remain isolated and few tourists come to see the place where Napoleon lived out his last days. ►► Also watch our special programme to mark the bicentenary of Waterloo: "Napoleon, the rise and fall of a military genius" Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Sub...
